The Storm Water Storage Tank at Millhouses Park, Sheffield
Yorkshire Water needed to create extra storm water storage to prevent flooding within Sheffield City Centre.
Joint venture contractor Earth Tech-Morrison was chosen to carry out this work at the Millhouses Park site.
Due to the prevailing geological conditions, ETM had to construct a 10,000m3 rectangular underground storage tank, rather than the conventional deep shaft arrangement.
When the job got under way, major problems were experienced with groundwater flooding and the project fell behind programme.
As part of an initiative to get back on programme, it was decided to use Bamtec - steel reinforcement in a roll, supplied by Hy-Ten Reinforcement Co. Initially, Bamtec was to be used just in the base slab.
However, according to site supervisor, Alice Chaplin "It worked so well on the base that we did the roof with it too. The results were amazing. We saved an enormous amount of time and site labour also. Only 3 or 4 guys were used to lay down the steel throughout the project."
Danny Dobson, site project manager was also very pleased with Bamtec saying "Overall construction costs were much cheaper. Time and labour were the essence - to gain the same speeds with loose bars we would have to have used more than 12 fixers. The roof slab went down extremely well also by using Bamtec - we pulled back about four weeks on the job."
Danny also felt that the use of Bamtec was much better from a Health & Safety viewpoint stating that "Health & Safety is a big issue these days and Bamtec is much safer than conventional methods - there is no back breaking lifting required, the men much prefer to use it"
